ATK registers thumping victory against Aryans
27th September 2015
In their final practice match before ISL 2 starts on Oct 3, ATK got the better of local club Aryan FC. Though the Aryans put up a spirited display, especially their foreign recruits Stanley and Kareem, the red hot ATL boys were too much for them to handle!
In a match that saw head coach Antonio Habas play each of his boys, there were plenty of moments of extremely skilful football from ATK. While the Aryans struck a goal through Orak in the 2nd minute of the match to go one up, Jaime Gavilan levelled within the next 3 minutes. The first 20 minutes of saw some very fast football, with a lot of passes being made by the ATK boys- a style reminiscent of 'tiki taka' which was popularised by the Spanish national team which won the World Cup in 2010. South African Sameehg Doutie, playing in India for the 1st time, was extremely useful in the right flank creating numerous chances and making repeated inroads past the Aryans' defence. A series of extremely well-executed passes in the midfield led to our striker Sushil Kumar Singh scoring the 2nd goal for ATK. But, just before half-time, Aryans levelled by virtue of a goal by Moses, despite some very physical defensive blocking by captain Arnab Mondal.
The second half saw ATK's marquee player, Helder Postiga, join the party along with star players Borja Fernandez, Iain Hume, and Javi Lara. Javi was in terrific form through the pre-season, and it looks like he's carried it to Kolkata! It wasn't long before he scored a brilliant 3rd goal for ATK from close to the halfway-line. In spite of the trying weather conditions, ATK were unrelenting and kept attacking and breaking through the Aryans' defence. Baljit Sahni, who had come on to play in the second half, scored the 4th and final goal for ATK.
Looks like the boys have acclimatised with the conditions in the country, and are all set to defend the Hero ISL trophy!
