After an emphatic win over Kerala Blasters and a draw against Delhi Dynamos in the last two matches, ATK was always the firm favourite for today's match against the bottom-placed Chennaiyin FC. To turn the tide in our favour, CFC had lost the first leg with a 2:3 scoreline at home, and then there was always the Home advantage as well as the new additions to the squad for ATK.
With a total of 35,457 people attending the match, it was sure to be cracker.
Antonio Habas made a couple of changes wherein the injured Nallapan Mohanraj gave way for Arnab Mondal and Jewel Raja gave way for the back from injury Arata Izumi. The formation remained unchanged at 4-2-3-1, with Iain Hume and Valdo leading the attack, supported by Doutie and Arata on both flanks. The Midfield stayed untouched with Arnab Mondal joining the defense spearheads at the back.
The match started without much happening on either half with the ball mostly residing in the middle of the field. Though in the first minute itself, ATK had a great chance and in the 5th minute, Chennaiyin FC, yet the match remained uneventful for the first 15 minutes.
In the next 10 minutes onwards, the spectators saw a series of attacks on either side of the goal with ATK putting some stunning crosses inside the box only to be headed away and Chennaiyin breaking into accurate counter attacks, only to be thwarted by Amrinder Singh and the defense master minds.
On the 27th minute, the deadlock between the two teams broke as Chennaiyin FC's Raphael Augusto registered the first goal of the match which could have been prevented if not for a defensive error. Augustin Fernandes failed to clear the ball while RIno Anto's last second tackle didn't yield any result. Augusto steered the ball away from them and calmly slotted it past Amrinder to the back of the net.
The next few moments saw Chennaiyin trying to take the advantage forward and attacking well from Elano's passes and free kicks. However, 35th minutes onwards, ATK came back in the game. Iain Hume's energy teamed up with Sameehg Doutie and Arata Izumi's clinical crosses and Gavilan's accurate passes, gave a number of tense moments to the CFC defence.
Two minutes of extra time was added to the half time clock, but some searing action was still left. Borja Fernandez gets fouled just outside the box and Jaime Gavilan takes the free kick. His shot rebounds off the CFC keeper Karanjit and fall in front of Sameehg Doutie, who unveiled a stunner of a volley to find the back of the net from just outside the box, beating a mass of players standing inside the penalty box. With this cracker of a shot, Sameehg registered his first goal of the season and ATK attained the equalizer.
A last chance at goal was attempted from a cross by Doutie, but it was defended well by CFC. The whistle blew and the first half ended. The Scoreline read:
ATK 1:1 Chennaiyin FC
First Half stats: Ball Possession ATK 52%: 48% CFC | Attack Index: ATK 62%:38% CFC
The second half started with Chennaiyin FC being more aggressive on the field bringing in more chances at goal than their counterpart. Free kicks and corners taken by Elano, gave ATK some tense moments of struggle in the middle of the pitch but they defended well, ensuring Chennai doesn't convert any more goals.
The 57th minute saw a cracker of a shot being dished out by Iain Hume, when he ran with the ball inside the box, dodged a defender and aimed at the goal at lightning speed. But CFC keeper Karanjit was on his toes and somehow managed to parry the ball away for a corner. The 61st minute again saw another great chance, when Borja Fernandes tried to send in a long distance shot which missed the net only by some inches.
However, the best moment of the match was still waiting to be unleashed. CFC was running forward with the ball, when a calculated tackle by Arnab Mondal sent the ball to Doutie's feet, who took the opportunity to counter attack. With five players assisting him in the attack, he made a meticulous pass inside the box for Hume to collect. The swift player ran like a wind and with an accurate slid and exquisite touch, made sure the ball finds the back of the net. This articulate assist and goal ensured ATK lead the scoreline at the 63rd minute, with just half an hour left for CFC to make a comeback.
ATK continued to keep the CFC defence on their toes with some great passes and shots from Doutie and Hume, assisted by the entire team. In the next 30 minutes, a number of attempts at goal were made and the attacking index read 89% in the favour of ATK. A lot of fouls and yellow cards were flushed out in the middle as CFC slowly was losing their cool in the midfield.
With Arata being replaced by Jewel Raja, an in-pain Arnab Mondal with Denzil Franco and Iain Hume with the new signee Dejan Lekic, ATK prevented CFC from scoring an equalizer at the ending minutes of the game.
With a last minute attempt at goal by Valdo for ATK, the final whistle was blown and the match ended.
